Plant Biosecurity Certificate


About the Program

Plant biosecurity is defined as the safeguarding of U.S. agriculture and natural resources from the introduction, establishment, and spread of plant pests and noxious weeds. The Plant Biosecurity Certificate Program in SEBS/Rutgers is designed to train students to understand the biology of plant pests, to be proficient in risk analysis of plant quarantine pests, to be able to identify pests using available technologies, to learn the science of pest management, and to enter the workforce with USDA-APHIS-PPQ (United States Department of Agriculture-Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service-Plant Protection and Quarantine), DHS-CBP (Department of Homeland Security-Customs and Border Protection), and the private sector. Internships are possible with USDA-APHIS that will provide students with real-world work experience and opportunity to fast-track career employment.

Program Learning Goals

Students completing the Plant Biosecurity Certificate will be able to:

  1. Describe the biology of plant pests.
  2. Define the scientific basis for pest management.
  3. Identify pests using basic and advanced technologies.
  4. Perform risk analysis of plant quarantine pests.
