Research Excellence
In Our Department, Reaching for Ambitious Goals Is a Lifestyle
The department has a unique position which is rooted in its close connection with Rutgers Cooperative Extension. County Extension personnel communicate with board members of the NJ Department of Agriculture, which means that problems and challenges of today's farmers are brought directly into Rutgers laboratories. Industry and Rutgers research work collaboratively, many research arms in the Department of Plant Biology are directly sponsored by industry.
The faculty and student body corresponds to the general enrollment at the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, it is diverse and multifaceted. A network of experienced researchers who accumulated knowledge in the field for many years, and young faculty enhance varied perspectives and drive scientific outcomes.
Faculty Excellence
Faculty members conduct annual research symposia, field days, workshops, webinars, and educational seminars in association with Rutgers Cooperative Extension, and the industry in New Jersey and throughout the world.
Plants developed by Plant Biology faculty members are industry leaders in their field, such as hazelnut, dogwood, mildew resistant basil, fruit trees, to name a few.
Student Research
Students in the Plant Biology graduate program attend and are awarded in various symposia and competitions.
Resources
Faculty members in the Department of Plant Biology have access to conduct experiments in several greenhouses, which provide controlled environments to test hypothesy driven research. Isolation from weather and fluctuations in temperature, and interfering microbes allow for consistent experiment conditions throughout the year, which substantiate an optimal environment for cultivation.
Nine Research Centers and Farms are directly associated with the department and many more centers and farms managed by the New Jersey Experiment Station are accessible to conduct research. Many of them in walking distance and some of them located throughout the state of New Jersey.
A core facility which provides bio-imaging, bio-molecular interaction analysis, protein and nucleic acid detection and quantification, flow cytometry, and high-throughput screening instrumentation is accessible in the department building.
